Nearly 1.7 Million Pounds of Sugar Recalled Over Possible Wheat Contamination
A large sugar recall is making headlines, but there is an important detail consumers should know before throwing away the sugar in their pantry.
United Sugar Producers and Refiners initiated a voluntary recall on August 19, 2026, involving nearly 1.7 million pounds of light brown and powdered sugar because of possible wheat kernel contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class II on September 21, 2026.
The affected products are listed under the United, Crystal Sugar and Good & Gather brand names and include both consumer-size packages and much larger commercial bags.
But there is an important clarification involving Target.
Although two Good & Gather products appear in the FDA recall record, Target reportedly told Newsweek that the affected Good & Gather inventory never reached Target distribution centers, stores or customers. Target said sugar purchased by its customers is not affected and that customers do not need to take action regarding those products.
Why Was the Sugar Recalled?
The recall was initiated because of possible wheat kernel contamination.
Wheat is one of the FDA's nine major food allergens. Someone with a wheat allergy could experience an allergic reaction after consuming food containing wheat that was not declared on the label.
The FDA designated this a Class II recall, a category used when exposure to the affected product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, or when the probability of serious adverse health consequences is considered remote.
This is an allergen/contamination issue, not a recall for bacteria such as Salmonella or Listeria.

Where Was It Distributed?
The FDA recall information lists distribution in:
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
The FDA has not published a complete list of every business or commercial customer that received affected sugar. The recall includes large 25- and 50-pound packages, so the nearly 1.7-million-pound total should not be interpreted as 1.7 million pounds of consumer-size Target sugar.
Approximately 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar are involved overall.
What About Good & Gather Sugar From Target?
This part deserves some clarity.
The FDA enforcement information lists certain 2-pound Good & Gather brown and powdered sugar packages among the affected product configurations. However, Target has reportedly said the affected inventory never reached its distribution centers, stores or customers.
That means consumers should not assume that all Good & Gather brown or powdered sugar is recalled simply because the brand appears in news reports.
What Should Consumers Do?
If you have United or Crystal Sugar products matching the recalled package sizes and batch numbers, particularly in one of the eight distribution states, compare the brand, size, UPC and batch number with the recall information before using the product.
People with a wheat allergy should not consume a product confirmed to be part of the affected recall.
And remember: the brand name by itself is not enough to determine whether a product is recalled. The package size and batch information matter.
Maria Approved It Bottom Line
This is a legitimate FDA-classified recall involving a substantial amount of sugar, but some headlines can make its consumer impact sound broader than the available evidence supports.
Nearly 1.7 million pounds refers to the combined weight of consumer and commercial-size sugar products across several brands.
And while Good & Gather appears in the FDA record, Target says the affected inventory did not reach its stores or customers.
We'll continue watching for any change to the recall, additional distribution information or updated instructions from the FDA.
